Eligibility

Graduate students who are currently registered at the University of Maryland College Park and pay student activity fees are eligible for our services.  Services are provided free of charge to eligible students. We are required to confirm your student status before you use our services.  Please have your student ID available whenever you call or come in to see us.

Graduate students at Shady Grove, UMUC or other campuses not requiring payment of student activity fees are not eligible.  We cannot provide services to alumni, staff, faculty, or other members of the campus community.

Conflicts of Interest

Our office cannot provide assistance where there is a conflict or potential conflict of interest between two or more graduate students.  If your case involves a complaint against another graduate student, please contact us so that we get more information about your case and determine whether a conflict of interest exists (as the term is defined by the rules of professional conduct that apply to attorneys and other legal staff).  If appropriate, we will provide referrals to other campus or outside offices. In certain cases, we can also act as a mediator between all individuals who are involved in a dispute. For example, if you are seeking a divorce or separation from another UMD-CP student, we can assist both parties in a joint appointment.

Phone or Email Appointments

Please note that, though not preferred, we may be able to provide legal assistance by phone or email. If you are unable to visit us in-person, please contact our office and we will determine if it is possible to handle your case remotely.

Booking/Keeping Appointments

We respectfully ask that you keep appointments that you book with our office.

  • Cancellations should be made with as much advance notice as possible so that we can accommodate another student during your time slot.
  • If you are more than 15 minutes late, we may ask you to reschedule your appointment, so that we have adequate time to provide a consultation.
  • If you do not appear for your appointment on more than two occasions, we reserve the right to no longer allow you to make appointments with us.  You will be welcome to see our attorney during walk-in hours.
  • Please make only one appointment at a time.
  • In the event of inclement weather, our office follows the University of Maryland schedule (as addressed by UMD Alerts).  You may reschedule your appointment by booking online here or calling our office at 301-405-5807.

Immigration Legal Aid Appointments

It is our policy to advise F-1 and J-1 visa holders who are sponsored by the University of Maryland to meet with UMD’s International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS) prior to meeting with the immigration attorney.  It is critical that students meet with ISSS regarding the subject of their case/concern in order to determine the potential impacts on their student visa status.  ISSS is the University’s representative and is in the best position to provide students with information to protect their current visa status as a student at the University.  To schedule a meeting with ISSS please visit their website

Due to the high demand for this service, graduate students are permitted one appointment with GLAO’s immigration attorney per academic year. As such, please ensure that you come prepared with all of the information, questions, and documents that are relevant to your case. This will ensure that you are able to take full advantage of your appointment. Students requiring additional immigration legal advice following their appointment can reach out to GLAO for a referral to a local attorney or organization.
