The GLAO provides free legal information, consultations and referrals to UMD-College Park graduate students on a wide range of both off-campus and university matters.

  • Notary Services - An appointment is not required for this service.  Please call us ahead of time at 301-405-5807, to ensure that a notary will be available to assist you.  


Excluded Services

We do not handle specialized areas, however, we can help you evaluate your situation and refer you to appropriate outside resources.  We are also not able to handle cases which would constitute a conflict of interest. Examples of excluded services include:

  • Student vs. Student
  • Campus Grievance Procedures - visit the Ombuds Office for assistance
  • Claims against the University of Maryland
  • Credit Counseling & Bankruptcy
  • Courtroom Representation
  • Felony Criminal Charges
  • Income-Producing Activities - this includes graduate students who are landlords
  • Intellectual Property - visit the Maryland Intellectual Property Legal Resource Center
  • Real Estate Transactions 
  • Tax or Income Tax issues
  • Emergency Legal Services
  • Cases outside the state of Maryland - The GLAO attorney is barred in the State of Maryland.  For out-of-state cases, general information will be provided.

We do not represent students against the university and we cannot advise one student directly against another student in a civil law matter. We cannot represent students in court. We cannot evaluate the merits of purely academic issues and cannot intervene with professors, advisors, or departments on academic matters. Please review our policies for more information.

Debbie has spent her career serving others and lives by the belief that, "We rise by lifting others."  With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Penn State, she loves working at UMD and being part of the university environment.  In the midst of coordinating office activities, Debbie's job gives her the opportunity to support graduate students who have legal concerns.  With a love of organization and a desire for excellence, she is pleased to contribute her energy and skills to helping graduate students.
